International Graduates Scheme Overview
The International Graduates Scheme was created in an attempt to encourage newly graduated overseas students to stay and seek work in the UK. IGS is seen as being a transitional step from graduate to the UK labour market and the graduate can enter into the scheme within twelve months of graduating in the UK, or within 12 months of the end of their UK Leave period (which ever is most beneficial to the student).
The international Graduates Scheme gives the newly graduated overseas student the opportunity to enter into the UK job market and gain valuable UK work experience and potentially high earnings both of which could count towards the opportunity of gaining enough points to switch into the HSMP category
International Graduates Scheme Criteria and Requirements
The criteria that needs to be met is clearly outlined in the following link: UKCOSA
Providing that all of the requirements set out by the Boarder and Immigration Agency (BIA), the overseas graduate’s UK Leave can be extended through The International Graduates Scheme from both inside and outside of the UK.
Applying For IGS From Within The UK
There are basically two means of applying to enter the International Graduates Scheme from within the UK
- Via Postal Application to the Border and Immigration Agency (BIA)
- Via submission of the IGS application in person to the BIA / Home Office's Public Enquiry Office in Croydon.
The postal service is the slightly cheaper option, the Home Office's Processing Fee is currently £395 but you have to send your International Graduates Scheme Application form FLR(IGS), passport and supporting documents through the UK mail - IGS applications submitted using the postal system can take several weeks, you will therefore be without your passport throughout that period.
The Public Caller Unit / Public Enquiry Office in Croydon charges £595 to process IGS Applications on the same day. The applicant is required to visit Home Office/Border and Immigration Agency’s office and file the FLR(IGS) application form and supporting documents in person – providing that all criteria is met and the IGS supporting documentation is complete and in order the decision is made on the same day.
Rather than attend the Home Office in person, the applicant can Instruct an immigration solicitor or immigration advisor to such as ECS to provision either of the above.
Applying From Outside of The UK
Where the graduate has returned to their home country or exited the UK, applications can be made filed through UK Embassies abroad: OVERSEAS EMBASSIES
or through participating third party Entry Clearance Service providers VFS Global: VFSGLOBAL
