EXTENDING UK VISA/UK LEAVE TO REMAIN EXTENSION TIPS

GENERAL:

  • Ensure that you are using an up to date and correct form;
  • Ensure that your signature on the form matches your signature in your passport;
  • Ensure that all relevant sections are duly completed and that you have gathered all the supporting documentation in line with the BIA's checklist;
  • Ensure that your passport photos meet the BIA's requirements;
  • If submitted by post or in person, make a copy of the supporting documents;
  • Make sure that your application is filed before the expiry of your current leave;
  • Ensure that your police registration (if applicable) is up to date;
  • We would recommend that you keep a record of all your travel out of the UK (date of departure, date of return, country visited and purpose of the trip) as you will be required to provide a schedule of absences when you come to applying for settlement (ie indefinite leave to remain) and naturalisation.

WORK PERMIT HOLDERS:

  • make sure that your bank statements or payslips covered the three month period – copies or internet prints should be stamped and countersigned by the issuer;
  • if you are a student switching in country who has yet to be issued with your original degree certificate, submit an original letter from your university confirming that you have PASSED the ENTIRE course.

ANCESTRY VISA HOLDERS:

With the advent of the 5 year continuous residency requirement to lead to settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain ILR), many holders of ancestral visas are finding themselves to be a year short of qualifying. Ancestral visa holders in this position can extend their UK Leave status by filing an FLR(o) application.

Documentation Requirements

  • Your full birth certificate.
  • Marriage certificates of your parents and grandparents, and legal adoption papers if you or your parents are adopted.
  • The full birth certificates of the parent and grandparent through whose ancestry you are making your application.
  • Your marriage certificate or civil partnership registration document, if your husband, wife or civil partner intends to join you in the UK .
We advise that all of the above be original documents – in some case the BIA will accept a certified copy ONLY if it has be certified by the issuing body/establishment.
